Whatever sent you looking for this
Most people reach the marketplace because something changed — a job, an age, an address. The right answer depends on which one.
The plans are the same for everyone. What differs is which deadline is running, whether you qualify to enroll right now, and which trade-off makes sense for the year you are about to have.
Something ended
- You left a job, or lost one — the COBRA versus marketplace decision, and the 60-day clock that is already running.
- You are turning 26 — when coverage actually ends, which is usually not your birthday.
- You retired before 65 — bridging the gap to Medicare, with income you have unusual control over.
Something about work
- You work for yourself — estimating an income you cannot predict, and the deduction most people miss.
- Your employer's plan costs too much — the affordability test, and what changed for families.
Something moved
- You are moving — why a marketplace plan does not travel with you, and what a new rating area changes.
None of these?
Then the question is usually just timing. Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Outside it you need a qualifying life event.
